My photography practice lives between care and disruption. I am interested in creating comfort or gently unseating it because that is where honesty tends to surface. As in nursing and as learned from my mentor Matthew Jordan Smith, solace begins with listening. I build simple, low-pressure situations where people can release performance and actively participate in the image-making process. At other times, I allow curiosity to lead, challenging my subjects in pursuit of something less controlled and more revealing. These provocations take many forms: shifting the tone of dialogue, testing physical presence, or engaging in play.

As I grow as an artist, my work yearns for multiplicity and can be seen between projects like Reconstructed Layers and Black Gold. Right now, as I return to America after years in Japan, the same urge shaped A Hiro’s Prologue: venturing away from beauty or futuristic imagery, I chose to dive into personal documentary. Through this work I ask how place pulls you toward an older version of yourself, what has shifted in the people you love, and how do you picture that distance? By allowing my practice to hold multiple approaches, I move through uncertainty with intention, clarifying how I am evolving artistically.
